Don’t Wait for the Grind: How to Know When Your Brakes Need Attention
February 26, 2026
G’day, Mornington drivers! Whether you’re cruising down the Esplanade or heading up the Peninsula Link, there is one thing you never want to take for granted: your car’s ability to stop exactly when you need it to. Your brakes are the most important safety feature of your vehicle, and while they work hard every trip, they do eventually wear down.

At PTJ’s Mechanical Services, we want to make sure you’re staying ahead of the curve. Here is a quick guide to help you “listen” to what your car is trying to tell you about your brakes and rotors.
Signs Your Brakes Are Crying for Help
You don’t need to be a qualified mechanic to spot when something is “off.” Your car is actually designed to give you several warning signals:
- The High-Pitched Squeal: Most modern brake pads have a small metal built-in wear indicator. When the pads get thin, this piece scrapes against the rotor to create a screeching sound—it’s basically your car’s way of saying, “Check me soon!”.
- The Scary Grinding Noise: If you hear a harsh, metallic grinding, it’s a major red flag. This usually means your pads are completely gone, and metal is rubbing against metal, which can quickly destroy your rotors and is very dangerous.
- Vibrations and Shudders: Do you feel a pulsing in the pedal or a quivering in the steering wheel when you slow down? This often indicates warped or unevenly worn rotors, usually caused by excessive heat build-up.
- The “Spongy” Pedal: If your brake pedal feels soft or sinks further to the floor than usual, it could mean there is air or moisture in your brake lines, or even a fluid leak. This is a serious safety risk that needs immediate attention.
- Pulling to One Side: If the car drifts left or right when you hit the brakes, you might have uneven pad wear or a sticking caliper.

When is it Time for a Changeover?
Brake pads don’t have a fixed “expiry date” because it all depends on how and where you drive. While the average set lasts between 25,000 and 65,000 miles (roughly 40,000 to 105,000 km), stop-and-go city driving or towing heavy loads will wear them out much faster.
As a rule of thumb, new pads start at about 10–12mm thick. Once they wear down to 3–4mm, it’s time to schedule a replacement. If you wait until they are thinner than that, you risk damaging your rotors, which makes the repair much more expensive.
DIY: What You Can (and Should) Do Yourself
We love a hands-on owner! Here are a few things you can do at home to keep an eye on things:
- Visual Inspections: You can often see your brake pads through the spokes of your wheels. If the friction material looks thinner than a couple of stacked coins, give us a call.
- Dashboard Watch: Keep an eye out for any brake or ABS warning lights.
- Listen Closely: Simply turning off the radio and listening for those squeaks or clicks once a week can save you a lot of trouble.

When to Leave it to the Pros at PTJ’s
While some DIY enthusiasts might feel comfortable swapping pads, there are critical parts of the braking system that require professional tools and expertise:
- Rotor Machining or Replacement: Rotors often need to be measured with a micrometer and either machined (resurfaced) or replaced to ensure a smooth, safe braking surface.
- Caliper & Guide Pin Maintenance: These parts need to be cleaned and lubricated with special high-temperature grease. Using the wrong lubricant can cause them to seize up, leading to brake failure.
- Brake Fluid Flushes: Dealing with hydraulic fluid and bleeding air out of the lines is messy and precise work that is vital for your stopping power.
